Home study with Gem-A

• Gem-A has run Open Distance Learning (ODL) courses since 1921.
• These may be started at any time. Students work at their own pace with the help and guidance of an expert tutor.
• You may take up to two years to complete the Foundation, Diploma in Gemmology or Gem Diamond Diploma courses.
• Correspondence students, particularly those overseas, will need to check availability of local practical tuition and suitable examination centres before enrolling.
• Practical tuition is available at Gem-A’s London headquarters and at many Allied Teaching Centres (ATCs) and at Allied Gem Tutorial Centres (AGTCs).

Gemmology Practical Tuition

For those students choosing to study the ODL Course, the practical is a vital part of their Gemmology course. In order to provide the widest choice of practical tuition there are many short courses and workshops at our London Gem Tutorial Centre. For students not able to attend our London workshops there is a network of Gem-A Practical Tutorial Centres worldwide that provide essential practical tuition.

Loan Stone Library

Students in the UK and within the EU may join our ‘loan stone library’.

This provides a selection of stones to correspondence students to observe gem materials and practice gem testing. However, this does not replace the need for some practical tuition with a Gem-A approved practical tutor.

Foundation Practical Endorsement

Correspondence students studying the Foundation course must attend a practical workshop either at the Gem-A London headquarters, at an ATC or an AGTC (minimum length one day) by arrangement directly with Gem-A , the ATC or AGTC. The cost of this practical workshop is not included in the course cost. The practical work must be endorsed by an approved Gem-A tutor.

Diamond Practical Tuition

The cost of the Correspondence Diamond Course includes a 6 day practical grading course in London , followed by the practical examination.

Those students who already have the Diamond Practical Certificate can take the theory part as a Correspondence Course only. Theory-only students will only receive the theory notes and a crystal model with their course.

To enrol on a Correspondence Course

Just complete the downloadable application form and return it to the Gem-A Education office together with payment. Fees for the Gem-A London courses and for Correspondence Courses cover all tutoring costs unless otherwise stated, as well as course materials and examination fees. Costs for any travel and accommodation must be met by students.

Course Fees

Students wishing to pay by installments may only do so using Visa or MasterCard. Your first payment will be taken on the day you apply and then on the first working day of each month. Courses can be started at any time.
