After the examination

  • As soon as your answer books arrive at the Education Office, they are checked against a numbered list from your examination centre. The books are then collected by or sent to the examiners, with invigilator's comments.
  • The examiners do not mark your papers at the Gem-A offices. They have no access to the lists of candidates; they see only your number and do not know your name.
  • Borderline marks may receive extra attention and may be re-marked by another examiner. Certain papers are exchanged for second marking and examiners may go back over some papers after marking the first batch, in order to ensure an accurate standard of marking.
  • The final collation of the marks for all parts of the examinations is possible when all the papers have been translated, delivered from over sixty centres in China, arctic Lapland, New Zealand, Canada, Africa and many other regions, and marked by the external examiners.
  • Your results will normally be posted to you in late August (for the June examinations) and late March (for the January examinations).
  • Results will be posted to the address shown on your Examination Entry Form. If you move from this address, do not forget to inform the Education Office. Tel +44 (0)20 7404 3334 or Fax +44 (0)20 7404 8843.
  • Please do not telephone the Education Office for results, or to find out when they will be ready. All results are posted as soon as they are ready to send. Immediately after they are sent to each candidate, results are sent to teaching centres and to home study tutors. No results are given to anyone over the telephone under any circumstances.
  • When all is finally checked and ready to run, we generate the results letters and send them out as soon as they are ready.
  • In your results letter you are given a grade. No marks are given. Grades A and B are Passes; Grades C and D are fails.
  • Please remember any extra telephone calls to the office tend to delay results, so please try to be patient; we know it is a frustrating wait! We work as fast as accuracy and checking will allow. After your result certain Awards are made for the best candidates of the year. Awards and Diplomas are presented at a grand Presentation of Awards Ceremony each year in London. Currently this ceremony is held in the Goldsmiths' Hall near St Paul's.
  • As a Member of the Association and as a Gemmology Diploma holder, you will be eligible for election to Fellowship and thereby entitled to use the world-renowned letters, FGA. Members who hold the Gem Diamond Diploma are elected to Diamond membership and can use the letters DGA.
