This one-day seminar will provide a perfect introduction to the wonderful variety of gemstones available on the market today, with a special focus on the factors that are essential for all those working with gems in jewellery, including:

  • durability in wear
  • susceptibility to damage in manufacture, repair or cleaning

You will gain the insights to enable you to best take advantage of the beauty of gemstones in your designs while minimizing the potential for problems.

The World of Jade

Explore the world of jade at this new practical workshop from Gem-A, and discover how jade is defined, the countries that are producing jade and the mining methods used.
You will have the opportunity to handle and examine for yourself samples of jadeite and nephrite, looking particularly at the colours and qualities, and learn the practical techniques for the identification of its imitations and treatments.

Whether you have no previous experience of the jade, you already have a passion for it but want to learn more or your knowledge of the subject is simply a little ‘jaded’, you will enjoy this informative day, led by Gem-A's senior tutor Doug Garrod.

Ruby, Emerald & Sapphire

An informative day covering these beautiful and important gemstones. You will begin by looking at their physical properties and identification of natural ruby, sapphire and emerald, followed by their treatments (including lead-glass filling of ruby), simulants and synthetics.

You will be able to handle and examine a wide range of these gems from Gem-A's extensive collection. Students will gain experience through hands-on observation and testing techniques with guidance from our tutors. Whether you buy, sell or value gems or gem-set jewellery, or simply have a love for these gems, this is your opportunity to update your knowledge.

Pearls - Nature's Gift

A chance to indulge your love of pearls. From the origins of natural and cultured pearls, marine and freshwater, to the treatments and simulants in the trade today, students will gain experience through hands-on observation with guidance from our tutors and guest lecturers. The factors which affect quality and commercial aspects of pearls will also be covered on the day. This is a thoroughly informative day for anyone with a passion for pearls.

Allure of Gems

An exciting day of discovery delving into the fascinating world of gemstones. You will be amazed at the diversity of gem materials, some of which you never even knew existed! This is an ideal day for those taking their first steps into the world of gems. The day will start by learning how to look at gemstones and crystals correctly by using a loupe. You will then be able to handle and examine a wide range of gemstones from Gem-A's extensive collection, learning about many different varieties, their origins, localities and properties. This is both an informative and informal workshop, ideal for those new to gemmology. No previous experience is required.

Introduction to Practical Gemmology

Are you considering studying gemmology? Or do you require an introduction to the use of gem-testing equipment? If so, this is the workshop for you. This practical day will help you understand the principles required for effective gemstone identification. The use of different types of gem-testing equipment will be demonstrated. You will then have the opportunity to try gem testing for yourself with the guidance of a Gem-A tutor. No previous experience is required.

Bead Stringing I

Under the guidance of an experienced stringer, in a practical and informal atmosphere learn the techniques needed for successful basic stringing. The types of threads, clasps and needles are available and how you choose what to use, and how to overcome large or sharp drill holes will all be topics covered on the day. All materials will be provided and students will have the opportunity to make and take home a single-strand necklace. This is an ideal workshop for those who are looking to begin stringing for themselves, friends or family. Please note that due to its practical nature, the finishing time may vary.

Bead Stringing II

A continuation of the introductory bead stringing workshop, participants will gain insight into the problems of multiple strands and graduated beads, as well as on how to deal with more complicated designs. They will also learn how to fix pendants and plan the length of a necklace which includes a pendant. Those who want practical guidance from an experienced stringer, or just need to refresh their skills, will find this workshop ideal. Participants will make and take home a double-row necklace.
